The most impressive cave of Kefalonia is Drogarati. Its is located in Haliotata village, 3 km away from Sami. Aged 150 million years old, it consists of rare red stalactites, stalagmites and has amazing acoustics. Because of its amazing acoustics, the big central space, the largest in Greece, is granted for concerts. Located at an altitude of 120 meters, the depth reaches 95 meters, and temperature is 18 degrees Celsius. The room is very large, with dimensions of 65 to 45 meters and a height of 20 meters. It is a rare geological phenomenon that has been developed for tourism.
The cave has been damaged by many conquerors of Kefalonia, but also inexperienced cavers, who many years ago, while conducting their research, destroyed many priceless pieces of the cave. An experienced staff member informed us that modern -day cavers have discovered the continuation of the cave which has a length of about 2 km. Also, we told that the cavers are trying not to adversely affect the time-consuming process of this nature, but unfortunately there are no plans for future tourist development of this majestic continuity. The stalactites and stalagmites are a unique and impressive piece of nature we should visit.
